Growth over the course of the study and a little summary

By Alan Rybczynski

Small women, little men, and undersized teenagers are increasingly wondering how to grow a little more. They would like to affect their height by some easy way without painful surgeries and rails in their legs..

The level of publicly available information on the topic of affecting height is low. Let’s start with the official position of medicine, which says that men grow to a maximum of 25 years of age (often shorter), and women to about 20 years at most. After this time, growth is stopped, bone epiphyses develop into hard bones.

Quite a different, optimistic stance is held by the authors of guides (mainly e-books) on growth. They try to convince all potential customers that with stretching exercises, starvation, hypnosis, etc., it is possible to significantly increase growth in an adult.

Both opinions are only partially correct. The effects of exercise and various procedures depend on age. A teenager will grow the most, but even after a hard bone is formed, an adult can influence its length. However, contrary to the opinion of marketers, it will not be 10 centimeters. The average human would have to experience a miracle.

It seems that the problem of height is urgent, because in the West there is already a word “heightism”, meaning prejudice and discrimination because of height. Mainly the short people have the right to feel overwhelmed, complexes are born and the need to make themselves longer at all costs.

The progress of knowledge about increasing height is moving forward. Russian scientists, led by Alexander Teplyashin (the owner of the patent related to this), informed the press that using stem cells, bones in an animal study began to grow again, so it is possible to lengthen long bones in humans. American scientist Eben Alsberg of Case Western Reserve University is working on methods to manipulate stem cells to repair damaged tissues and organs. It turns out that with their participation, cartilage tissue can turn into bone, but also vice versa! If everything comes to fruition, it will be possible to change bone into epiphyseal cartilage and force the adult body to grow. Without the need for surgery, cutting through bone, and putting in metal splints as before. As of today, the research is not over, and even if it is, there is no guarantee that everyone will be able to afford the medical innovation.

Already today, adults can increase their height by using commonly available means. You don’t have to look far. A visit to a physiotherapist and exercises to straighten the spine are enough to regain 1-2 cm, lost by a hunched posture. The second example is various dietary supplements or medications, well documented with research-proven effectiveness. These are not so-called “hgh-boosters”, because simply increasing growth hormone in adults causes acromegaly. Instead of the expected growth, the nose, hands, feet and other body parts are enlarged – it’s a shame to disfigure yourself.

Additionally, there are experimental methods that have lengthened the femurs of mice in studies. Quite controversial at first glance, but in the States they are gaining supporters claiming to have lengthened legs (including tibia bones) by up to 4 centimeters, and have also affected forearm bones and toes.

Invariably, children, adolescents and adults in whom the epiphyseal cartilage has not yet ossified are privileged to increase growth. At this age, the amount of natural growth hormone, although decreasing with age, still remains high. Young people have the greatest potential to still grow. Every day, physical activity is essential to stimulate growth hormone and bone growth, plus exercises that stretch the muscles. A balanced diet containing all the necessary micronutrients for the formation of new bone tissue is also indispensable. Remember about sufficiently large amounts of protein and uninterrupted sleep, during which the pituitary gland secretes the most growth hormone. If its amount is too low, you can use artificial, but under the supervision of a doctor. Parents should first go with their child to see a paediatrician or endocrinologist.

Everyone, who has a complex about their height, should finally start to like their height after the program. If we are looking for understanding and acceptance from other people, let’s find it in ourselves first.
